About Baixa / Downtown

The Baixa is Coimbra's lower town along the Mondego, centred on Praça do Comércio, the pedestrian Rua Ferreira Borges and the Santa Cruz Monastery, where Portugal's first kings are buried. The Parque Verde and riverfront give it green, walkable space, while the Sé Velha and university rise on the slope above. It is the city's most walkable and commercially lively quarter, full of cafés, tascas and student bars and busiest during the Queima das Fitas festival. Ageing buildings and tight parking temper family appeal, but central location and steady student demand make it a core buy-to-let target.
