Arrowtown's Buckingham Street is a time capsule — 1860s miners' cottages with original stone walls and corrugated iron roofs now house some of the Queenstown region's best restaurants. Provisions serves seasonal menus from a heritage cottage, The Postmaster occupies a 1907 post office, and the Dorothy Brown Cinema offers wine and cheese by a roaring fire before the film. More than 70 buildings are heritage-listed. At the river's edge, the Chinese Settlement tells the story of miners who came from Canton in 1868 — restored shelters and interpretive panels paint a picture of gold rush hardship. The Arrow River itself offers gold panning, swimming holes, and walking trails that glow amber and gold every April when Arrowtown's deciduous trees produce New Zealand's most famous autumn display. Property is expensive — the average sits at NZD 2.69 million — but the combination of heritage character, natural beauty, and limited supply (heritage protection restricts development) has made Arrowtown one of New Zealand's most aspirational addresses. Coronet Peak ski field is 15 minutes away, and the Queenstown Trail provides cycling access to the wider region.
