About Sohar Port and Free Zone Area

The Sohar Port and Free Zone is where the city's economy actually happens. One of the Gulf's busiest deep-sea ports moves around 60 million tonnes of cargo a year, and the adjacent free zone and industrial estate concentrate metals, petrochemicals and logistics, backed by more than RO 2.3 billion of committed investment. It is a strictly working environment of terminals, warehouses and worker canteens rather than a place to live. For a property investor its importance is indirect but central. The thousands of jobs here are what fill the apartments and villas of Sohar's residential districts. The clear risk is concentration: when the residential play depends so heavily on a single industrial engine, the fortunes of the port and the rental market move together, for better or worse.
